What to Wear & How to Prepare
You’ve booked your headshot session – so what comes next? See below for answers to some frequently asked questions.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Most headshot sessions just focus on the top third of your body – but we may do some full length shots as well. With that in mind – dress head to toe.
CLOTHES:
- Pick out two to three outfits to bring.
- Before your session, try all the outfits on to make sure they are clean, pressed and fit with proper undergarments, accessories and shoes.
- If you have a pet, you’re welcome to borrow my lint roller.
- Your three outfit categories are:
On the Job – wear clothes that symbolize your work or what you wear when working
ex. Apron for a Chef, Athletic Wear for a Personal Trainer, etc.
Professional Headshot – most formal of your outfits, think “LinkedIn profile picture.” Aim for solid colors in neutrals (black, brown or navy) or jewel tones (sapphire, emerald, or ruby).
ex. Business / Business-Casual attire
Brand Style – clothing that fits the mood of your brand
ex. Polished and classic, colorful and youthful, trendy and risk-taking)
HOW TO PREPARE:
When I edit your headshot photos – I’ll be doing some light retouching – which means I’ll be magnifying and getting up close on your skin – in preparation for that – make sure to do the following.
FACE/SKIN:
- If you wear make-up: Have hair & make-up camera-ready to go – let me know if you want recommendations on local Hair & Make-up Artists.
- If you shave: Are you clean-shaven and groomed? (This includes any nose and ear hair)
- If you wear glasses – make sure they’re clean.
- Double check right before photos: Are your teeth clean and food-free? Does your lipstick need a refresh? Do you have a brush / hairspray for any touch-ups? If your skin is shiny – do you need some blotting paper?
WHAT TO BRING (optional):
- Tools of your trade that illustrate the type of work you do
- General working items such as a computer, cell phone, journal, coffee mug
- Any products you create or sell
- Something fun that showcases your personality or hobbies
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- At your headshot session, we’ll do some sitting, standing and walking poses
- I’ll give you prompts and directions to help you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera
- After your session, I’ll do some light retouching on the final edited files
