Have questions before you book a Family Photo Session?

I’m here to help navigate the process and answer your frequently asked questions.

frequently asked questions for family photo sessions with stephanie friedman photography

See below for answers to some commonly asked questions about Family Photo Sessions with Stephanie Friedman Photography.

      1. Timing and Scheduling:
        • When is the best time of year to schedule a Family Photo Session in Austin, Texas? Do you prefer wildflowers in the Spring or want photos just before sending out holiday cards in the Fall? When is your family’s schedule less busy? With our reasonable weather most of the year, you can pick most months to be outside in Austin.
        • How far in advance should you book a session? I recommend booking 1-2 months in advance of your preferred date.
        • What factors should be considered when choosing the time of day for the photo shoot? Some locations work best in the morning and some have the best light in the late afternoon. We’ll take those factors into consideration during our pre-planning conversations.extended family photo session at Great Hills Country Club in North Austin.
      2. Location and Setting:
        • What types of locations work well for senior photo sessions? I have a HUGE BLOG POST that lists 80+ settings in Austin for photo shoots.
        • Are indoor or outdoor sessions better? I prefer outdoor sessions for the natural light and sense of place (unless bad weather and deadlines mean we can only meet indoors).
        • Can families choose a location, or is it typically determined by the photographer? We’ll work together to decide the best location that works for the time of year the session is booked. year of average temperatures in austin, texas
      3. Style and Wardrobe:
        • What should the family wear for the photo session? It depends on your location – will you be hiking along a trail in a park or on top of a downtown garage?Decide your setting and pick clothes that are comfortable, flattering and that you can move around in. Are you able to pick up little kids and sit on the ground in your outfits?
        • Plan to coordinate colors (pick 3-4 total) rather than strictly matching. Remember to add accessories.  Avoid: neon colors, large logos, phones/wallets in pockets.More details on my BLOG POST

      4. Editing and Retouching:
        • What level of editing and retouching is typically done? My motto is “if it’s not a permanent feature, I will retouch it” Example – I usually photoshop out acne and do light retouching on skin.

        • What is the typical cost of a family or extended family photo session? You can see my current rates HERE.
        • Are there any additional costs that families should be aware of? If you’d like to purchase prints or print products through your gallery – those are extra. You only receive the digital files through my family package plan. Some locations also require a booking fee (cost varies). family photo session at mayfield park in austin, texas

        • What rights do families have regarding the use of the photos? Client Rights are spelled out in my Client Agreement, which you’ll sign as part of our pre-planning process. Mayfield Park – Holiday Family Photos

Sunrise Session in the Park | Austin Family Photo Session

Last year I met this family at Lakewood Park near their home in Leander, Texas for their holiday photo session.

This year, the plan was an early morning session at Mayfield Park in Central Austin. After stalking the Mayfield Park booking calendar 30 days in advance to make sure we had a time slot and then paying the location fee, we were all set.

mayfield park fall family photo session

Tips for a Family Photo Session at Mayfield Park:

      • PERMITS: A commercial permit (including a location fee) is required to take photos at the Mayfield Cottage and Gardens. And bookings are only available 30 days in advance.
      • PEACOCKS: Be mindful of Mayfield Park’s free-roaming peacocks. Keep a respectful distance, but if they’re near you – feel free to capture them in your backgrounds. Or you can bring in your own peacock feathers to blend in.
      • PARK FEATURES: Besides the cottage on the grounds, there are also seasonal flowerbeds, lily ponds, a small water feature, stone arches and a stone tower. You can also explore the nearby Mayfield Trails.
      • PARKING: The small lot often gets filled up quickly, so you may need to park on the street.

Great Hills Country Club – Extended Family Photo Session

50th Birthday Party | Extended Family Photo Session

The last time I photographed this family, we were at the Murals on Justin Lane. This year, they had extended family members visiting Austin for a special milestone birthday party in December.

So, they decided to organize their holiday family photos as a pre-party event.

      couple holding number 50 balloons

We made sure to get lots of photos before the rest of the party guests arrived at the Great Hills Country Club.

extended family photo session at Great Hills Country Club in North Austin.

Tips for an Extended Family Photo Session at Great Hills Country Club:

      • PERMISSION: This club is open to Members Only, so make sure your family has permission for a photo session to occur.
      • LOCATIONS: Since it was late in the day, we were able to take some photos on the golf course without getting in the way of active golfers. We also used the open courtyard off their party room as a secondary location.
      • AMENITIES: Since the club was open when we were taking photos, if anyone needed a restroom or a place to sit when they weren’t being photographed, there were lots of options. We also make use of the tennis court for a few photos of their nephew who’s on his high school tennis team.
      • OUTFITS: With multiple families involved, coordinated outfits bring a cohesive look to the photos. Aim for complementary colors and avoid overly busy patterns. This family chose a holiday seasonal palette which worked beautifully against the natural and architectural features of Great Hills Country Club.
      • SHOT LIST: Make a list of all the preferred family combinations in order of importance before the session date. A detailed plan ensures everyone stays on the same page and maximizes time spent during the session.
