A Light Collab Studio – Extended Family Photo Session

Holidays in the Studio | Extended Family Photo Session

This Extended Family wanted their holiday photos taken together. So, we met up at the ALightCollab Studio in Pflugerville, Texas, which was decked out for Christmas.

Tips for an Extended Family Photo Session at the ALightCollab Photo Studio:

COMFORT: This indoor studio has plenty of seating, so if you’re rotating family members in and out of shots, the people “off-set” have comfortable places to sit and chat together, either downstairs or upstairs.
AMENITIES: This studio also has a kitchen stocked with snacks and drinks for any hungry teenagers you may have on hand. There’s also a restroom for changing outfits.
LIGHTING: You can rent continuous lighting with your studio fee. Or you have plenty of space to bring in your own studio lights. With the tall ceilings, I could use two seven-foot umbrellas with no problems.
DISTANCE: If your clients are based in North Austin, this studio is convenient to travel to with plenty of easy parking out front.
POSING: My top tip for posing large groups is to try and create triangles with positions so your eye moves around the frame. Also – to make sure there are points of connection between each family member.
HOLIDAY SETS: Keep an eye out for their holiday sets (which change every year). Those give you multiple backdrops to use when posing. But they also always have the rolling neutral wall you can use as well.

Blanton Museum Courtyard – Fall Family Photo Session

Blanton Museum Courtyard on the University of Texas campus | Family Photo Session

I last photographed this family at Katherine Fleischer Park. For this year’s holiday photo session, they chose the Blanton Museum Courtyard on the University of Texas campus as their location.

Once I double checked the Blanton’s Events page and the University of Texas Football schedule to make sure there wouldn’t be conflicts, we were set. FYI: the Museum is closed on Mondays if you want to go when it’s least crowded in the Courtyard.

Tips for a Family Photo Session at the Blanton Museum:

PARKING: I always recommend paying for parking at the Brazos Garage on MLK and then walking over.
LOCATIONS: There are so many intersesting and colorful backgrounds in this one small area. I love that you can see the Texas Capitol peeking behind their heads when they are seated under the Petals sculptures. Don’t forget about the alphabet mural on the backside of the Museum as well. *If you want to take any photos inside the Museum itself, permission is required.
WARDROBE: You’ll be surrounded by some bright, vivid colors, so keep that in mind when planning your outfits.

University of Texas – Senior + Family Photos

University of Texas at Austin campus | College Senior and Family Photo Session

Did you know that the University of Texas Tower building will undergo construction starting Fall of 2024 and go until Summer of 2027?

Not wanting construction fencing in her photos, this Class of 2025 Senior’s mom made sure to get her family and senior graduation pictures done early.

And we weren’t alone in this plan, lots of other graduation photos were happening on campus the same night.

If you’d also like to plan ahead, the University Co-Op has cap & gowns in stock (but the 2025 tassel charm was not available yet, so we left it out of our photos). If you’re planning on photos after January 2025, you should be able to get the correct year on your tassel charm.

Tips for a College Senior Photo Session at the University of Texas at Austin:

- Around Graduation, Campus gets full of photo sessions, so try and plan early or choose off-times for your photos.
- You may need to wait your turn in front of popular spots.
- Iron your regalia.
- You can pose in your full cap and gown, part of your regalia, regular clothes or any combination of the above.
- If you have a particular spot on campus that means a lot to you (ex. where you took the majority of your classes), let your photographer know – I also have a BLOG POST with my location recommendations
- If your family will be in town, we can add-on a mini-family photo session
- Bring two bottles of (cheap) champagne if you want to pop the cork (and a towel for after you spray it in the air)
- Get ready to “Hook ‘Em Horns!”

Seider Springs Greenbelt – Family Photo Session

Seider Spring Greenbelt Park Family Photos | Austin Family Photographer

Last year, I met this family downtown for a rooftop photo session.

This year, they chose something different, a nearby park on the greenbelt. Luckily, recent rains helped make Seider Springs look more green than it was over our dry summer.

Their twin boys had fun climbing trees, stacking rocks and exploring the creek during our session.

If you live in Austin and are also interested in having your Family Photo Session at Seider Springs, check out my tips below.

Tips for Family Photo Sessions at Seider Springs Greenbelt Park:

There’s convenient parking near St. Andrews School (you’ll only be able to park on one side of the street – follow the signs).
Seasonal fall colors appear in the trees around late November / early December.
This park is secluded and rarely crowded for a personalized experience.
Note: this park does not have restrooms

What prompted you to have this photo session? Every year, our family gets our photos done. Even though we constantly snap photos on our phones, we love having photos where we all get dressed up, are all in the picture, and of course, have the benefit of a professional taking the photo. Our kids are now 11, so it’s fun to look back over the years and see how they have grown (though slightly less fun to see how the grown ups have also grown).
What do you plan to do with your digital photos? We use the photos for our annual holiday card, but also love getting magnets with the kids pictures to send out to family.
How did you choose your location for your session? We really rely on Stephanie’s advice for the location – she has so many great suggestions. The last two years, we had our pictures taken downtown, which turned out great, but this year we wanted something different and one of Stephanie’s suggestions was Seiders Park – which was perfect and also close to home!
What advice would you give to others planning a similar Family photo session? This year, we told our kids that if they listened to Stephanie’s directions the first time, we would be done much quicker. That seemed to really help them pay attention, and everyone was a lot more relaxed and happy about the process.
Anything else you’d like to add about working with Stephanie Friedman Photography? When working with Stephanie, I am always confident that she is going to get great pictures, but I am also constantly impressed with her turnaround time.

Pease Park – Family Photo Session

Live Oak Meadow to Kingsbury Commons in Pease Park | Family Photo Session

Last year, I met this family on South Congress for their photo session. For this year’s fall photo session, this mom and her daughters chose Pease Park as their location.

Knowing Luminarium (the Pease Park fundraiser) was happening the same weekend, I went and scouted out the Park earlier that day to make sure all our favorite spots would still be accessible for photos.

Happily, they were. So, we were able to start at the Live Oak Meadow and then make our way across the park to the Kingsbury Commons for a variety of backdrops to their session.

Tips for a Family Photo Session at Pease Park:

- For more of a natural background, the Live Oak Meadow has lots of tall oak trees, some with beautiful hanging Spanish Moss, as well as easy access to explore Shoal Creek. Certain times of year the water levels may be very low.
- If you want to include some architectural elements, Kingsbury Commons has the two-story metal and rope Treehouse. It aslo has a nature play area and the charming Tudor Cottage with lights across its courtyard.
- In my experience, it’s been easier to find parking by the Live Oak Meadow than the Kingsbury Commons (and it’s about an 8-10 minute walk between both spots so make sure you’re wearing or bringing comfortable shoes)
- Check the Park’s Events Page to make sure there isn’t a conflict during your session
- The Park gets crowded on weekends so try to pick off times to visit for your photo session. (FYI: this spot is very popular for all types of photo sessions, so don’t be surprised to see other photographer’s working there)
- The park has restrooms you can use for session outfit changes if needed
- The snowball food truck is open year round in the park – so if it’s a hot day, it’s easy to end your session with a cold treat
