Shibori Workshop with Jamie McCormick – Creative Business Stories

Shibori Workshop with Jamie McCormick – Creative Business Stories

Are you familiar with local artist, Jamie McCormick? She’s a painter and mixed media artist living in Austin, TX (and our kids go to school together).

She has a collection of paintings done on indigo-dyed fabric. Recently, she offered an indigo-dying workshop held at the Gloria Collective. I attended, took pictures and also got to take home a set of dyed-napkins. (Though I feel like I should frame them rather than putting them on our dining table because I love them so much!)

So what are the steps in dying with indigo? (I’m so glad you asked)

First – learn about the different wrapping / prepping techniques.

Second – prepare your fabric by wrapping, folding, pinching, etc. You can use rubber bands, clothespins, blocks and more to get different effects.

Third – dip the fabric in water.

Fourth – Submerge the fabric in the indigo dye.

Fifth – Remove the fabric and let it oxidize. It will start out green-colored, then shift to blue. The longer you keep the fabric in the indigo dye, the darker it will be at the end of the process.

Sixth – Rinse again with water and repeat for your next piece of fabric.

Seventh – Take home your new piece of art (where you will wash it separately in cold water – perhaps even with a vinegar mix first to set the dye).

Eighth – Smile big because you love what you made 🙂

Thanks, Jamie – that was a very fun workshop!

If your business needs photo content for your website, blog or social media, I offer “Creative Business Story” packages that come in many sizes. Let’s work together. Contact me below.

Cityhouse Collective – Open House

Cityhouse Collective – Open House

Cityhouse Collective is a shared studio space in Pflugerville that’s about a 20 minute drive from Central Austin. They had their Open House this past weekend. I’ve been following along on Instagram as the space was created, so I was excited to see it in person.

Besides getting a tour of the space (meeting rooms, kitchenette, natural light shooting bay, etc.), and goodies to eat and drink, there were also two styled sets – one bridal and one for lifestyle branding.

Working in small groups, we got to try out the space.

Like a kid in a candy store (or like a photographer presented with beautiful natural light and gorgeous people), I took a lot of photos at both sets. I started at the bridal one first.

Model: Grace

Hair and Makeup: Modern Muse Beauty

Flowers: Wellspring Floral

Next up, I took my turn at the lifestyle branding set.

Model: Blakely

Hair and makeup: Modern Muse Beauty

Then once I was done, I got to enjoy some strawberry-basil cotton candy from Fancy Fluff.

If you would be interested in a daytime, indoor studio (with lots of fun furniture and props to use) for your own photo session, we can book this space (a location fee will apply).

See below for contact form (and my own branding shot from the Open House)

Sunshine, Sisters and Spring – Wildflower Session at St. Edwards Park

Sunshine, Sisters and Spring – Wildflower Session at St. Edwards Park

It’s always an honor getting to work with another photographer’s family. You get to collaborate during the session, and trust Natalie to find all the best golden hour pockets of light. Another bonus, it’s extra special when you’ve known the mom since you were both teenagers yourselves. Back in the day, we both did the high school musicals. And around the 46 minute mark you can see one of our dance numbers together in Pippin (Natalie is on the left, I’m in the middle).

But back to the present, Natalie is just as fun and adorable as always.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we went to St. Edwards Park to check out the wildflowers in bloom.

I loved getting to capture each girl’s personality.

And the family dog’s personality as well 😉 Hi, Satsuma!

The wildflowers were putting on quite a show.

family in wildflower at St. Edwards Park in Austin, TX

Which meant we had to put on a show back 😉 Or at least the only one wanting to do splits would…

Thank you, S. Family!

And thanks to Natalie for taking some behind the scenes pics as well.

Please enjoy this sneak peek of their Spring session images. To see all the photos and purchase prints from the gallery, click HERE.

1. How do you know Stephanie Friedman Photography?

I have known Stephanie for more than 20 years! We both grew up in New Orleans, and went to high school together where we were both in the drama club and performed in shows together. 🙂

2. What was your favorite part of your photo session?

The location Stephanie suggested was spectacular.

3. What advice would you give to other families planning a photo session?

Let Stephanie direct you! She was great at moving us around, telling us where to look, and how to make ourselves feel as natural as possible while she was shooting.

4. Anything else you’d like to add?

It was so much FUN. Stephanie is such an easy person to be around and completely put our whole family at ease!!
