Pease Park – Family Photo Session

Pease Park – Family Photo Session

Live Oak Meadow to Kingsbury Commons in Pease Park | Family Photo Session

Last year, I met this family on South Congress for their photo session. For this year’s fall photo session, this mom and her daughters chose Pease Park as their location.

Knowing Luminarium (the Pease Park fundraiser) was happening the same weekend, I went and scouted out the Park earlier that day to make sure all our favorite spots would still be accessible for photos.

Happily, they were. So, we were able to start at the Live Oak Meadow and then make our way across the park to the Kingsbury Commons for a variety of backdrops to their session.

Tips for a Family Photo Session at Pease Park:

    • For more of a natural background, the Live Oak Meadow has lots of tall oak trees, some with beautiful hanging Spanish Moss, as well as easy access to explore Shoal Creek. Certain times of year the water levels may be very low.
    • If you want to include some architectural elements, Kingsbury Commons has the two-story metal and rope Treehouse. It aslo has a nature play area and the charming Tudor Cottage with lights across its courtyard.
    • In my experience, it’s been easier to find parking by the Live Oak Meadow than the Kingsbury Commons (and it’s about an 8-10 minute walk between both spots so make sure you’re wearing or bringing comfortable shoes)
    • Check the Park’s Events Page to make sure there isn’t a conflict during your session
    • The Park gets crowded on weekends so try to pick off times to visit for your photo session. (FYI: this spot is very popular for all types of photo sessions, so don’t be surprised to see other photographer’s working there)
    • The park has restrooms you can use for session outfit changes if needed
    • The snowball food truck is open year round in the park – so if it’s a hot day, it’s easy to end your session with a cold treat

Blanton Courtyard – Family Photo Session

Blanton Museum Courtyard | Family Photo Session

I last photographed this family in Pease Park. For this year’s holiday photo session, they chose the Blanton Museum Courtyard on the University of Texas campus as their location.

Once I double checked the Blanton’s Events page and the University of Texas Football schedule to make sure there wouldn’t be conflicts, we were set. FYI: the Museum is closed on Mondays if you want to go when it’s least crowded in the Courtyard.

Tips for a Family Photo Session at the Blanton Museum:

  • PARKING: I always recommend paying for parking at the Brazos Garage on MLK and then walking over.
  • LOCATIONS: There are so many intersesting and colorful backgrounds in this one small area. I love that you can see the Texas Capitol peeking behind their heads when they are seated under the Petals sculptures. If you want to take any photos inside the Museum itself, permission is required.
  • WARDROBE: You’ll be surrounded by some bright, vivid colors, so keep that in mind when planning your outfits.

Seaholm / Butterfly Bridge – Family Photo Session

Seaholm / Butterfly Bridge – Family Photo Session

Downtown Austin | Family Photo Session

This family chose the Seaholm District and Butterfly Bridge area for their yearly photo session. I’ve been lucky to photograph this family for over 10 years now. And six years ago, we also met in the same Downtown Austin area for photos.

See below for some then & now comparisons from 2018 to 2024:

One advantage of using the same Austin Family Photographer year after year, is that she can replicate poses so you can really see how your child has grown.

Tips for Family Photo Sessions in the Seaholm District:

  • PARKING: Garage parking is available at the Central Library or Trader Joes nearby (you can also use the restrooms at the library if they’re open)
  • LOCATIONS: There’s a great variety of urban and nature backgrounds in a few block radius. Make sure you take advantage of all the different backdrops available.
  • TRAFFIC: This area is very popular, so expect other photo shoots to be happening at the same time and take your turn in front of popular spots. You will also have literal car traffic going across the Butterfly Bridge, so be careful when photographing there.

South Austin Trails – Family Photo Session

South Austin Trails – Family Photo Session

Southwest Austin Park Trails | Austin Family Photographer

I last photographed this family in the Spring at the Blanton Museum. For the fall, they chose a spot closer to home, the park trails near their house in Southwest Austin.

Then we ended up in their front yard recreating some of the same shots we’d taken when the kids were younger.

Tips for Family Photo Sessions in the park:

  • Pack water if it’s a hot day, and bring snacks if you think your kids will get hungry during the family photo session
  • Wear comfortable shoes since we’ll be walking along the trails
  • Bring a blanket whose colors coordinate with your outfits in case we want to take any seated photos
  • You can also bring a prop for an activity you enjoy doing (guitar, kite, ball, etc.)

Summer morning family photo session at Bull Creek District Park

This was my ninth year donating a family photo session to the Viva Gullett Elementary School Auction. This bid winning family requested an outdoor nature setting that was “still green in June” for their backdrop. After sending them some scouting photos, we picked Bull Creek District Park.

Recent rains meant the creek was flowing and the kids could have fun splashing around. If you have kids who like to climb trees and fence posts and don’t mind getting wet – Bull Creek is a great location to use for your own family photos.

Tips for Family Photo Sessions at Bull Creek Park:

    • Bring a towel and water shoes (or go barefoot) and we can get some photos in the Creek itself – just be careful not to slip
    • There is a restroom next to the parking lot in case you’d like to change outfits during your session
    • This location works well for sunrise or sunset session times
    • Bull Creek Park is very popular for all types of photo sessions, so be prepared to see other photographer’s working there
    • Don’t leave any valuables in your car – I often see broken glass in the parking lot from break-ins

    1. What prompted you to have this photo session? It’s been several years since we’ve had professional family pictures and it was definitely time!
    2. What do you plan to do with your digital photos? We would like to put an updated family photo in our dining room.
    3. How did you choose your location for your session? We told Stephanie we wanted something in nature that preferably was still green and lush looking. She scoped out some areas and found the perfect fit for our family.
    4. What advice would you give to others planning a similar photo session? Enjoy the moment and don’t sweat the small stuff; Stephanie is going to get some great shots for you! Oh yeah, and if you are doing photos near water don’t forget to bring the towels down with you to the photoshoot. You never know when someone might slip and fall in the water 🙂
    5. Anything else you’d like to add about working with Stephanie Friedman Photography? Honestly, we haven’t done a family session in years because everyone always complains and dreads doing it but this time was different- Stephanie made it easy and fun!
